The IUCN Red List includes the Felidae (cat family).

What is the IUCN Red List?

“Established in 1964, The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of animal, fungi and plant species” (IUCN, 2025).

Basically, it categorizes and gives inventory of the extinction risk of any (animal or plant or fungi) organism that has been assessed (including cats). The result is that the database provides an indicator of the world’s biodiversity health. According to the IUCN, 166,061 species have currently been assessed, and the goal it to grow this number (2025). Over the years the list has grown and the documentation and data quality improved.

Who uses the IUCN Red List?

The Red List is used by “government agencies, wildlife departments, conservation-related non-governmental organisations (NGOs), natural resource planners, educational organisations, students, and the business community” (IUCN, 2025).

How is the IUCN Red List Used?

The list shows where/what actions are needed for conservation and:

  • guides scientific research
  • informs policy and conventions
  • influences resource allocation
  • informs conservation planning
  • improves decision-making
  • educates and raises awareness
  • contributes to human health/livelihoods

How Often is the IUCN Red List Updated?

Assessments of organisms are constantly being submitted, and they try to update the website a minimum of two times a year. A schedule plan is made (although subject to change) and posted on the website.

Who does the assessments for the IUCN Red List?

According to the IUCN website, most of the assessments are condiucted, “by members of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC), appointed Red List Authoriteis (RLAs), Red List Partners, or specialists working on IUCN-led assessment projects” (2025). But they note that anyone with satisfactory knowledge of a particular species may submit an assessment for consideration.

For cat species, assessments are conducted by the IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group (both red list and green status).

What are the IUCN Red List Categories?

The system classifies organisms according to the risk for global extinction. There are nine categories. If a taxon is “downlisted”, it’s good news that conservation efforts are helping and the extinction risk has decreased; “uplisted” is an increased risk of extinction.

Not Evaluated (NE) – has not been evaluated against Red List criteria

Data Deficient (DD) – information on abundance/distribution is lacking

Least Concern (LC) – after evaluating against Red List criteria, it doesn’t qualify as NT/VU/EN/CE

Near Threatened (NT) – after evaluating against Red List criteria, it doesn’t qualify for VU/EN/CE right now, but is close/likely to in the close future

Vulnerable (VU) – meets any one of the five criteria (A to E) for VU

Endangered (EN) – meets any one of the five criteria (A to E) for EN

Critically Endangered (CR) – meets any one of the five criteria (A to E) for CR

Extinct in the Wild (EW) – surveys of historic range have recorded no individual; only survives in captivity, or is a naturalized population (lives in an area not part of their natural range)

Extinct (EX) – surveys of historic range have recorded no individual

Criteria A to E are used for determining VU or EN or CR. The details of the specific numbers for each criteria used for differentiating between VU/EN/CR are more complicated, but can be viewed on the IUCN Red List website: https://www.iucnredlist.org/resources/summary-sheet.
A population reduction
B restricted geographic range
C small population size & decline
D very small or restricted population
E extinction probability analysis

Green Status Assessment

The Green Status Assessment of organisms (started in 2020 as an optional assessment) measures the recovery and conservation success. Factors contribute towards a green score (1-100%), showing how far an organism is from “fully recovered”. There’s a formula used to calculate this green score. Many organisms will never be 100% because areas of their historic range are now human occupied.

Not Evaluated (NE)

Indeterminate (ID)

Fully Recovered (FR) = 100% (throughout its range it is: present, no extinction threat, & performs its ecological role)

Slightly Depleted (SD)

Moderately Depleted (MD)

Largely Depleted (LD)

Critically Depleted (CD)

Extinct in the Wild (EW) = score 0%

Extinct (EX)

Felidae (Cat Family) Species Global Red List & Green Status

The cat family has been red list assessed at the species level. At this time nearly every single species (41) have been assessed. Although many of these assessments are from 2014-2016 and a new assessment should probably be done as many populations were in decline.

At this time only a few cat species have been assessed regarding green status.

The Domestic Cat (Felis catus) is not assessed. At one time it was considered a domestic version of the Wild Cat (Felis), but according to the 2017 classification by the Cat Specialist Group it is a separate species. Regardless, it’s obvious that the worldwide Domestic Cat is in no danger of going extinct (it’s more likely to contribute to the extinction of other animals).

The Sunda Leopard Cat (Prionailurus javanensis) has not been assessed. This is due to the recent classification division from the Mainland Leopard Cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) (IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group, 2017).
